Cozy Trattorias, Grand Chandeliers, Leisurely Strolls…

2011/01/05 § 6 Comments

They say that how you spend the first day of the year dictates how the rest of the year will be.  So I made sure that New Year’s Day (1-1-11) is filled with good thoughts, good wishes, good food and good company…

Sparklers, bubblies, warm hugs and kisses greeted New Year’s Eve…

We dined on traditional lucky food  – fish (caviar parfait),  pork (lechon sa hurno), green leaves (kimchi), beans (lentil soup), sweets (caramelized butternut squash), cake (Buche de Noel aux marrons) and the 12 grapes.  (Not exactly sure they got along flavorwise but I was going for luck here…)

We danced and drank and talked the night away….and woke up to something like this:

Then it was time for brunch at one of my favorite places in New York City.   I love walking through the door (especially in wintertime) and stepping into this tiny but grand space with soaring timber wood ceiling, a majestic eight feet high handblown Venetian glass chandelier, stone floor, cozy hearth and that old world charm.

Off to the side of the beautiful foyer of the Gramercy Park Hotel is this bright, cheery, sunlit place  (I think it so even in the evenings)  in the fashion of a Roman trattoria…

Maialino.  I love that it’s cozy and friendly and serves simple, unbelievably good food such as this Raviolo al Uovo…pasta in brown butter with a beautiful yolk that oozes out when cut and perfectly creamy sage ricotta inside.

Their Cacio e Pepe Strapazzata is the most delicately flavored yet rich scrambled eggs I’ve ever had. Simplicity personified.  With only pecorino and black pepper added to it…

After cups of cappucinos and toffee-glazed brioches on top of the eggs, we spent the rest of the day walking around the city… jumping over puddles, talking some more, stepping on snowbanks, expunging old issues, making new plans, buying belated Christmas gifts and saying hello to dear friends…

Wish I could say that we saw something like this Chekhov comedy at a small theatre later on (we were in New York after all)….

But we went to a commercial moviehouse late in the afternoon…and saw a commercial film instead. The Fighter. J and I loved it though.  A great film to cap a splendid day.

Hope the rest of your year (and mine) is filled with as much warmth and wonder…
