Ai Fiori

A couple of Sundays back, J and I had lunch at Ai Fiori.  It is the newest restaurant of Michael White, who is fast becoming my favorite chef here in New York City.  Ai Fiori is at the Setai in midtown and although the space is rather bland, it isn’t surprising for a hotel-based restaurant.  Apart from that, I have only kind words for the people manning the door and the waitstaff who were very polite and accommodating.  (This in stark contrast to the hostesses at John Dory Oyster Bar who were nothing but rude, rude, rude.)

Back to Ai Fiori, I am amazed once more by the delicacy of flavors of all the food that’s served.  Both the sardine and the cod were fresh and eaten with the several components of the dishes were just truly outstanding.  The gelatos were subtly flavored but addicting.  And the bowl of gelato came with a cookie that tasted of Christmas.  We thought it was funny when we asked what it was and we were told that it was made from a “secret” proprietary blend of spices.

After the marvelous lunch, J and I walked a bit, towards Bryant Park.   When we were in front of the Public Library, we saw a van with Batman’s car inside it.  I was quite excited as I thought I would catch a glimpse of Batman being filmed.  There was also a Lamborghini and a Rolls Royce behind the van and when we asked what this was for, one of the crew said they were filming a remake of  “Arthur.”

…when you get caught between the moon and New York City…I know it’s crazy, but it’s true.  If you get caught between the moon and New York City…the best that you can do, the best that you can do…is fall in love.”  Has it actually been thirty years since the original movie?  Thirty years?!  Wow…time flies.  And I was reminded again of that song.  And my very first visions of New York.  And I guess it’s true – for all the many wonderful things that you can do in the city, the best that you can do…. is fall in love.
