I Sat Under a Cherry Blossom Tree

And got lost in the profusion.
Which I almost missed, but not quite.
That this abundance comes straight out of the barrenness of winter is the wonder of it. The blossoms do not slowly come out, one by one, like flowers from the ground. No, it is cluster upon cluster of blooms perched heavily or hanging languidly off the branches. All at once. The white ones so like pure snow. An umbrella of white beneath blue skies. Breathtaking and joyful, whatever color they are. I am compelled to go under the tree and breathe in it when I see one. And laughter wells up from deep within.
But just as swiftly as it appears is as swiftly it departs. The cherry blossom lingers just long enough to make us smile.
I sat under a cherry blossom tree today.
I sat on the grass and looked up. So pink against the blue sky. So beautiful. But waning. I was a week late. I watched as the breeze blew petals off the tree. Petals falling gently to the ground. Petals falling gently on me. And I watched as people shook the branches for petals to rain on them. And they danced and laughed under petal showers.
As beautiful as the cherry blossom is in its youthful blush…. it is so too in its dying days. The soothing comfort of its falling petals as immense as the joyfulness of its intense splendor.
Can one ever tire of sitting under a cherry blossom tree?

oh wow, how pretty! such a poetic post, too.
Thanks Jacqueline! I love your portfolio, by the way!
Stunning photos! Congrats on being Freshly Pressed.
Thanks Rufus! I’m going to try some of your recipes one of these days.
lovely pictures..the colors are so nice and SPRING-y hehe..congrats on fp’ed
Thank you, Eva! You’ve got a cute blog!
Great Post 🙂
Thank you, Alex!
oh wow. We don’t have that tree and season in here, half way round the globe. lucky you! 🙂 Thanks for sharing…
Thank you! I know, quite lucky to have them here. And you also have to run and see it as the blossoms come and go so quickly!
Cherry blossoms are absolutely beautiful when they start to blossom in the Spring 🙂
Indeed, Lakia!
Beautiful. It snowed here yesterday — I guess it really is spring in some parts of the country!
Thank you for sharing…
🙂
It’s still snowing? Well, it’s back to cold and wet days here in New York as well. And for a time I thought it was summer 😀
Thanks for dropping by!
你好,我是来自中国,日本樱花真漂亮
Hello, I am from China, Japanese cherry blossoms really beautiful
Hi Jiangan! They are!
你是美国人吗?美国也有樱花吗?
Are you American? America has also cherry blossom?
No, I’m not American but I am in America. There are cherry blossom trees here, mostly given as gifts by the Japanese 😀
我的英语不是很好,你明白意思吗?
你去过中国吗?
My English is not very good, can you understand what mean?
Have you ever been to China?
No, I’ve never been to China. I would love to visit someday 😀
Wonderful post. There’s tree’s like this in my local park and they have finished blossoming. Twas wonderful when the petals came down.
Reminds me of Rutger Hauer’s monologue at the end of Blade Runner. Burns so brightly, then fades so suddenly.
Thank you! Love your Cafe poem 😀
I NEVER tire of sitting under the Cherry Blossoms! Beautiful photos, beautiful and poetic narrative. Thank you.
Thank you! Yes, I know. A day spent under a cherry blossom tree is a day well spent.
At Snaffley School we take the students out to look at the blossom regularly. They are allowed to collect it in their play-skirts and they then use it in craft activities – glueing it on to hollow onions, throwing it in the air to make science displays, compressing it to make pardy perfumes, sticking it on their cheeks to make traditional ‘glame’ masks and many more!
Thank you! I love your blog!
You’re very welcome. And thank you for being the first to comment on chalkboard chestnuts
there were beautiful cherry blossoms outside of my window for a few weeks and i am so mad at myself for not getting any pictures. i figured they’d be around for all of spring; little did i know how fast they die. they brightened up my window… my whole apartment. it was a beautiful site after this awful winter. i’ll be sure to catch them next spring!
great post; i share in your enthusiasm for cherry blossoms 🙂
You’re lucky to have cherry blossoms outside your window! Yes, watch out for them next spring and don’t forget to take photos!
Wonderful imagery. I planted 3 mature Yoshino cherry trees a few years ago, and soon they will be big enough to relax under, like the ones pictured here.
Thank you! Oh wow – I’m envious. Would love to have a garden with a cherry blossom tree too.
Gorgeous prose and imagery! Thanks for the reminder about the simple things!
Thank you, Julio! As I grow older, I have realized that its the simple things that make me happy.
I know exactly what you mean about being too late, and how quickly they fade….
I was fortunate to take a spring walk and catch the cherry blossoms just as they were beginning to bloom, along with all the other flowering trees (my neighbor’s magnolia was magnificent!)…
Sadly within days it seemed, the blossoms were gone, scattered all over the ground and trampled in the mud.
Now the trees are leafy and green as any summer day could wish for… but I wish I’d spent more time amidst the blossoms of spring. *sigh*
Well, that’s why we capture these moments on camera, and your images are breathtakingly lovely. 🙂
Cheers!
Thank you, Tara! There’s always next spring!
Yes, the magnolias are beautiful too. Check my post on DC Spring Weekend. Have magnolia photos there.
One of my favorite spring time blooms!! My kids and I call them ‘cotton candy trees’.
Oh, you’re right! They do look like cotton candies 😀
And this is why the Japanese commonly have parties under them while they bloom, I think called Hanami. While the cherry blossoms bloom, you will see the Japanese picnicking underneath them in droves.
Like snowflakes, each one seems unique.
True, Deanna! You also gave me an idea – think I’ll organize a picnic next year under a cherry blossom tree.
a lovely post and a gorgeous cherry blossom tree! Nice pictures, they perfectly describe springtime!
Thank you!!!
ohh, ^_^ I love these flowers very much 😀
really pretty post
I wish one day, I sit under one of these trees.
I hope you get your wish someday!
this is so beautiful. i hope you dont mind me reblogging it new friend.
Thank you! It’s my pleasure to be reblogged 😀

I love Cherry Blossom Trees. So beautiful!
They are beautiful, aren’t they?! Thanks for dropping by!

They are amazing. I pray you have one in your life someday 😀
Well written, and delightful illustration.
Thank you! Your poems are great!
Wonderful post, very beautiful!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
I personally love cherry blossoms! I’ve always wanted to visit Japan, where they originate. I really enjoyed reading this post and I am in love with the pictures. Thanks for sharing!
Happy to share! I’ve always wanted to go to Japan myself. Til then, will have to content myself with the cherry blossom trees in the Botanical Gardens.

Thank you for dropping by and taking the time to comment!
Gorgeous; thanks for sharing the experience with us. We’re having a pretty late spring here in Colorado — we had snow again just last week — but it looks like it might’ve finally arrived for real.
You’re welcome! It’s amazing that you still have snow there. But we’ve had really warm weeks and this week has been foggy, rainy and cold.
As long as you get some time under the blooms, life is better. Getting no time or not appreciating what you have is the worse.
Indeed! I’m grateful to discover simple acts such as these (sitting under a cherry blossom tree) which bring so much pleasure.
Thanks. http://cmgardening.wordpress.com
You’re welcome!!
i never seen one in real life, but based on your post, i would like to go and see it for myself.
I never thought I’d see one myself. I come from a country with no cherry blossoms. I just happen to move to a city that has them. And you also have to time it as the blossoms only stay up for around two weeks. I hope someday you see one!
Such pretty pictures! I love the one of the petals falling on your legs.
Thank you! I wish I had a nicer camera. What was really nice to capture was when people would shake a bough and petals would start falling over them. I tried but my camera couldn’t pick out the petals…
Thank you for posting these beautiful pictures and words. I have 2 of these cherry trees in my yard and wish they bloomed for a longer period of time.
I know. But i guess that’s their beauty. Their ephemeral nature. And aren’t they just shockingly beautiful when they bloom? I really don’t know how to describe my feelings when I see them. So beautiful.
Loved this one. The poetry is gorgeous as well as the pictures. In NYC. It’s raining today. this post was a breath of fresh air.
http://1ldroppout.wordpress.com
Hi Alex! it has been foggy and raining here in NYC. Which I love, by the way. Thanks for appreciating the post!
Leah, you are part of “post a week”, aren´t you?
please, give me some insight about that project…
Congrats!
Thank you, Sergio! There’s really nothing much to it. Basically, you commit yourself to writing a post at least once a week and tag it “postaweek2011.” You can also try the “postaday2011” if you think you can come up with a post a day, which is a bit difficult. WordPress has a separate category for these from which they choose posts to Freshly Press too. Goodluck with your blog – great idea! Hope to visit Peru someday. Will contact you for info, for sure 😀
Thank you, Leah! So i just tag that, that is! So easy!
Once i was chosen Freshly Pressed with my post on “I love downtown Lima” (part I). And I know it is difficult to post everyday because i tried that when i started my blog. Now i post only once a week.
And welcome to Peru and i am glad to give any info.
Really? Nice! It’s good that your blog is specific, unique and informative. So that helps in being chosen for FP. Plus you write well. I’m really looking forward to going to Peru. Will ask your advice when I do!
i love cherry blossom trees! i havent had the joy of seeing one in bloom since i moved t florida. thank you for bringing back some beautiful enchanting memories of living up north for me!
You are most welcome!
this sounds so beautiful and enchanting! makes me miss living up north, the weather changes and a true spring where life is just bursting every where
Yes, I have come to appreciate the seasons. I even love wintertime. But spring, when leaves start growing and flowers start appearing is truly amazing.
This makes me miss the sunshine!
Hi! But why don’t you have sunshine? Thanks for dropping by!
Beautiful words and imagery. I have yet to sit under a blossoming cherry tree but I was able to live vicariously through your post. Thank-you. xo
You’re welcome! I do hope you get to experience it someday. Words are not enough to describe the beauty of the blossoms…
So beautifully captured! Thank you for sharing 🙂
You’re welcome, Heather! Thank you for dropping by!
I can smell them now. One of my favorite things about visiting Washington D.C. Great photos and prose.
Thank you! I saw some random cherry blossom trees in DC but didn’t go to the Tidal Basin where there are many of them. I heard they are more beautiful than the ones we have here in NYC.
I lived in FL all my life until I moved to MD 3 years ago and the cherry blossom tree is by far my favorite thing about Spring here. They have a unique beauty that is captivates me.
So true. I promise to see them next year soon as they bloom 😀
awesome! 🙂
Thank you, Rochie!
beautiful 🙂
Thank you!!!
I love your writing, very poetic. And I also love your pictures. Gosh, cherry blossoms are beautiful, aren’t they? Congrats on being Freshly Pressed.
Thank you! The cherry blossoms were certainly inspiring. Turned me into a poet 😀

It’s the simple things in life, such as the natural beauty of nature, that make days brighter.
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
So true! Natural beauty does make life brighter.
very sweet 🙂 cherry blossom trees truly are lovely..
They are 😀
as does the cherry tree, your post makes me smile too.
🙂
And your dropping by to comment makes me smile too 😀
This was beautiful…..
Thank you! Happy to share some beauty in life…
Likewise, I never tire of sitting under the cherry blossoms. I was lucky enough to be able to take part in flower-viewing this year! I went almost every day for the week they were in bloom. That sort of the thing is the reason why spring is my favorite season.
Lucky you! I really wished I went to the garden earlier to see the blossoms in its early bloom.
Nice pictures! 🙂
Keep it green and have a look at the TREEhugger-Page: http://www.MyTree.TV
Kind regards from Switzerland

Nature is mesmerizing…
It is, indeed 😀
Lovely pictures. I’m wondering how the weather is.

It was very cold for a while so the cherry blossoms bloomed much later than expected. There was a spell of sunshine and warmth though so they lasted for a while. Now its foggy and rainy here in New York.
A lovely post. Thank you!
You’re welcome, Ashley! Thanks for dropping a line.
Thanks for the reminder to take time and enjoy them! They don’t last long….
You’re welcome! They do last so briefly…if we blink, we miss them.
Thank you for sharing and wow, cool pictures.
You’re welcome! Thank you for your comment.
lovely post, i’d love to find a cherry tree now 🙂
Hope you find one soon! Cheers!
so wonderful,i like your post!
Thank you! And thanks for commenting!
Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed. This was such a beautiful touches through the poetical words, and photographs. You almost took me to my childhood days… I was sitting or lying under a cherry blossom trees… And watching the blue sky and white summer clouds… This is so beautiful to live again same feelings with your post. Thank you so much, Blessing and Happiness, nia
Thank you, Nia! You are so lucky to have grown up with cherry blossom trees. They do fill my heart with wonder and cheer. Blessings and happiness to you too!
I think the picture with pretty pink petals on your lap is the best of the lot.
Awesome clicks!!! Beautiful!
Thank you, Sheeta! My camera isn’t high-tech enough to capture the petals falling…so I just took a photo of them already in my lap…
Its not the high-techness of the camera that makes any difference, I feel its the eyes behind them!
so beautiful … I can nearly smell that fragrance from here. Lucky you; petal blossoms falling around… sigh.
Cheers! MJ
It is beautiful! Such a balm to tired hearts…
nice post! =) how about my post?
Thank you!
I love the look of cherry blossoms:) nice post
Thank you, Sajeev!
Petals falling from a flowering tree always evoke so much emotion from me. They are so beautiful — even when they are falling — but it is so sad to see them fall. The Crab apple trees are blooming where I am. I saw one in a parking lot on Sunday and I had to stop to smell it. Then I had to take it’s picture. Then I had to smell it again — by then a few people were walking by giving me looks.
Crystal
I always stop and smell flowers myself. I do think sometimes people think me weird. Haha. But hey – it’s a simple thing that can make you happy. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Crystal!
That’s one of my favorite parts of early spring.
It is very beautiful. Thanks for dropping by!
Looks relaxing.
It is! Thank you for dropping by!
Yes, I have come to appreciate the seasons. I even love wintertime. But spring, when leaves start growing and flowers start appearing is truly amazing.
Me too! I love wintertime. But spring is amazing indeed 😀
I so love the Cherry Blossom Trees and your photos were just magnificent. They will be gone long before I return so thank for allowing me to enjoy the Cherry Blossom Trees. Congratulations on some amazing photography in all of your posts, especially the food photos.
Thank you, Cathy! I love the topics in your blog too. Will start visiting from now on. Have a good weekend!
Beautiful! It makes me sad that we are now moving into Autumn and the only thing falling are the leaves from the trees.
http://leeschmidt.wordpress.com/
Hi Lee! I love the seasons 😀 I always get excited when it’s time for a new one. Is it just cold and chilly there in winter? I’ve only been to South Africa in spring. Beautiful country.
oh wow. We don’t have that tree and season in here, half way round the globe. lucky you! Thanks for sharing
Thank you! Hope you get to see cherry blossoms someday 😀
